João Hasselberg

Born on January 24, 1986, in Lisbon, Portugal. He studied guitar and piano at the Academia de Amadores de Música de Évora and double bass at the Conservatory of Amsterdam (Netherlands), where he completed his bachelor's degree in 2010.

In 2018, he completed his master's degree in Music Performance at the RMC (Copenhagen), during which he began developing a personal approach to creation from a transdisciplinary perspective, combining sound, space, movement, image, and object.

Since 2004, when he started his professional career, he has played in a wide variety of contexts: performing with Benjamin Clementine at SBSR 2018, appearing in 2012 on Later... with Jools Holland with Luísa Sobral, and playing with João Lencastre at "Jazz em Agosto" in 2020 and 2022.

He regularly performs and records with artists such as Peter Bernstein, Tony Malaby, Mário Laginha, Júlio Resende, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, and Kresten Osgood.

João Hasselberg has performed at concert halls and festivals worldwide, including South by Southwest in Austin, Texas; the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC; the London Jazz Festival and the Barbican Centre in London; Jazz Ahead in Bremen, Tempodrom in Berlin, Alte Oper in Frankfurt, and Kölner Philharmonie in Cologne. He has also played at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in Denmark; the Barcelona Jazz Festival and the Cartagena Jazz Festival in Spain; the Cully Jazz Festival in Switzerland; Den Haag Jazz Festival, IJ Jazz Festival, Breda Jazz Festival, Meer Jazz Festival, and Trytone Jazz Festival in the Netherlands; the Red Sea Jazz Festival in Israel; Half Note Jazz Club in Athens, Greece; and Europa Fest in Romania. In Portugal, he has performed at Sudoeste TMN and CoolJazzFest.

In 2011, he collaborated with the "Descobrir" project of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He taught at the Hot Clube Jazz School from 2010 to 2016 and has given various workshops and masterclasses at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (Porto).

Alongside his musical career, he has developed his work as a photographer, collaborating with publications such as Público, Expresso, and Vanity Teen, as well as brands like +351, Stussy, Sebastien, Portuguesa, Loja 3, and Lachoix. In the social sphere, he has worked with APCC (Coimbra Cerebral Palsy Association) and Wave by Wave (social reintegration and therapy through surfing).
