Teaching

"I’m fascinated by the way we learn, improve and create. Understanding that each student has their own unique learning process and interests, I tailor my approach to fit each individual. By balancing a practical, effective approach with an emotional, inspiring and mindful perspective, I strive to offer a comprehensive view of music and the arts."

“I was fortunate to study with amazing musicians who sparked awakenings and epiphanies in me. I want my students to have the same type of transformative experiences that I had.”

André Carvalho is currently part of the teaching staff at Hot Clube de Portugal, where he instructs Composition, Double Bass and Ensemble. With a wealth of experience at various institutions, he has taught at Mark Murphy’s Music (New Jersey), Academia de Amadores de Música (Lisbon), ESTAL (Lisbon) and the Conservatório de Música de Angra do Heroísmo (Azores). His teaching philosophy centers around offering students a well-rounded view of music, combining essential technical skills with an emphasis on developing a genuine and joyful connection with the art form.

Since 2014, André has run his own private studio, where he has worked with students ranging from 6 to 75 years old, spanning all skill levels from beginners to advanced musicians. His approach covers Double Bass (Classical and Jazz), Piano, Improvisation, Composition and Ear Training, always encouraging creativity and the pure joy of musical discovery.

André holds a Master’s in Music (Jazz Performance) from the Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Double Bass from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He also completed a post-graduate program in Film Scoring at the European Film Scoring Academy. Over the years, he has studied with renowned musicians such as Sam Yahel, Ben Street and Ari Hoenig, experiences that have provided him with a rich and diverse musical perspective. André believes that his wide-ranging background has not only made him a better musician but has also shaped him into a more empathetic and inspired educator.
