Raquel Reis
A Portuguese cellist from Coimbra, she studied at the Conservatory of Music of Aveiro (with Isabel Boiça), the National Superior Orchestra Academy of Lisbon (with Paulo Gaio Lima), and Northwestern University School of Music in Chicago, where she completed her master's degree in Music Performance with Hans Jensen. She also studied in masterclasses with Anner Bylsma, Márcio Carneiro, Lluis Claret, Maria de Macedo, Xavier Gagnepain, among many others.
She was awarded 1st Prize at the Caldas da Rainha Interpretation Competition, 2nd Prize at the Estoril Interpretation Competition (2006), and won the Samuel and Elinor Thaviu Endowed Scholarship Competition in String Performance (Chicago) as well as the Winnetka Music Club Scholarship (Chicago).
She received scholarships from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Foundation for Science and Technology. Since 2007, she has been a member of the Gulbenkian Orchestra, while also collaborating with various orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the European Union Youth Orchestra, Spira Mirabilis Orchestra, and Ensemble Mediterrain.
She regularly performs in solo and chamber music concerts and occasionally teaches. She recorded the album Mundo Grande in Rio de Janeiro, featuring original Luso-Brazilian music. She also recorded Pessoa with her Trio Pessoa—alongside Otto Pereira (violin) and João Crisóstomo (piano)—a project dedicated to Portuguese piano trio music, featuring works by A. Fragoso, Vasco Mendonça, and Mário Laginha, with special guest appearances by Ricardo Ribeiro and Pedro Jóia.
Her work extends beyond classical music. She has participated in various projects involving early music, electronic music, film scores, dance, performance, jazz, improvisation, and world music. She has collaborated with musicians such as Mário Laginha, Peter Evans, Uri Caine, Waldemar Bastos, Mbye Ebrima, Gulami Yesidal, Salvador Sobral, Marta Hugon, André Carvalho, Mariana Lemos, among many others.
